Besides working online, I am under contract for two other companies in the "real world". I spend most of my day on the phone so background noise and interruptions are a big deal. 1) Have a separate part of the home for doing business and working. Keep the kids, toys and etc. out of this area. 2) Physically separate yourself from the kids, if possible, to make the mental transition to work. 3) Have set hours and duties for yourself during work hours. Also have a strict schedule when you stop and tend to the kids.. meals, naps, snacks, etc. 4) Ask for help! I have relatives and neighbors and we share the child watching in exchange for work time. Sitters are good, but that is money off your bottom line! 5) Explain to your customers what you are doing. I make it very clear that I work out of the home and while they have my full attention, there may be an interruption from time to time. Most understand if you let them know ahead of time. Do not use your kids as an excuse for poor work though! 6) Kids need structure. Have their day planned as well with planned meals, snacks, indoor and outdoor play time, work books, creative projects.
